In an internal memo, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella responded to the growing safety controversy. His message is clear: AI development must always remain under human control, and the sector must allow broader independent safety testing.
Nadella’s warning to the industry is strikingly direct: “If the sector doesn’t invest enough time to make safety solid, eventually the entire sector will lose the right to keep operating.”
His intervention comes at a time when pressure on AI companies to account for their safety practices is increasing. The combination of a performance controversy around the latest model, the departure of safety researchers, and public calls for delay makes for an uncomfortable week for the world’s largest AI labs.
