19 EU Countries Join a Major AI Infrastructure Initiative

Another major European development began yesterday but remains highly relevant to today’s AI news.

The European Commission welcomed an initiative involving 19 EU member states to create the first Important Project of Common European Interest, or IPCEI, dedicated specifically to artificial intelligence.

The project is intended to cover the entire AI stack, from advanced computing and AI management technologies to industrial products and services.

The initiative is also explicitly connected to European digital sovereignty.

That phrase is becoming increasingly important in European technology policy.

Europe wants to ensure that critical digital infrastructure does not depend entirely on companies and technologies developed in other parts of the world.

The AI project could therefore support European capabilities across multiple layers of the technology ecosystem.
