OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra, which the company claims is “the world’s most intelligent AI model,” positioning it as a direct challenge to rival Anthropic.
The model is said to demonstrate market-leading capabilities in software engineering, scientific research, and cybersecurity—areas that have become increasingly critical following several major security breaches in recent weeks.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman described the new model as representing “a generational leap in capability,” suggesting it could be viewed as artificial general intelligence (AGI). “Everyone defines AGI differently… it’s a fuzzy concept without clear boundaries. But I think when people look back, they will identify that AGI was born right now, with this model,” Brockman said.
Competitive Landscape Shifts
The announcement represents OpenAI’s attempt to reclaim technological leadership from Anthropic, which was founded five years ago by former OpenAI employees. Anthropic has seen its valuation soar to $965 billion, and the company is reportedly exploring an IPO that could value it at up to twice that figure.
OpenAI’s latest model is priced competitively with Anthropic’s flagship offerings, which have seen usage growth stagnate as users turn to lower-cost alternatives. OpenAI emphasizes efficiency improvements, with Brockman stating that “what really matters is cost per task… whether we can complete tasks at a reasonable price and appropriate speed”.
The model will initially be available to a select group of enterprise customers, allowing time to address cybersecurity concerns before broader release in the coming days.
