ChatGPT moves beyond text with GPT-6 and interactive AI-generated tools

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 with a new feature called Intelligent UI, which allows ChatGPT to combine written answers with interactive graphics, charts, forms and tools. Announced on 7 October, the update is designed to make the assistant more useful for tasks that are easier to understand or complete through interaction rather than plain text.

The rollout began with paid subscriptions and expanded to Free and Go users from 8 October, although availability can depend on account and workspace settings.

From answering questions to creating tools

With Intelligent UI, ChatGPT can adapt how it presents information to the question being asked. A comparison might appear in a side-by-side layout, while a complicated subject could be explained through an interactive diagram.

The assistant can also create small tools directly within a conversation. OpenAI gives examples such as a bill-splitting calculator, a retirement-savings calculator and simple games.

This means users may not need to open a separate website or spreadsheet for every small task. They can ask for a tool tailored to their needs and interact with it as part of the conversation.

Faster answers and more flexible responses

OpenAI says GPT-6 can begin responding while it continues to reason or use tools, allowing useful information to appear before the entire answer is complete.

The company also reports improvements in web-search performance and resistance to attempts to bypass its safety safeguards. These are company-reported results rather than independent guarantees of performance.

The larger change is the interface itself: ChatGPT can now choose between text, visuals and interaction rather than treating every request as a conventional chat exchange.

What this means for the AI industry

The development puts pressure on traditional software interfaces. Instead of navigating a dedicated application with fixed menus, users may increasingly describe what they want to accomplish and receive a customised interface for that task.

That could be useful for education, personal finance, planning, data exploration and everyday productivity. It could also create new opportunities for developers who build reusable components and services that AI systems can combine into tailored experiences.

There are limits. Generated tools still need to be checked for accuracy, and a polished interface does not guarantee that the underlying calculations or information are correct.
