Here’s the story that doesn’t get enough attention.
25% of Dutch employees use AI weekly at work. That’s one of the highest rates in the entire EU. Belgium isn’t far behind. The most-used platform? ChatGPT, with more than 30% of Dutch workers. Copilot follows at around 7%, and Gemini at 2%.
And the sentiment is genuinely positive. Dutch employees rate AI’s impact on their work at +0.67 on a scale from -1 to +1.
But here comes the “but.”
According to ServiceNow’s Enterprise AI Maturity Index, Benelux companies are investing heavily in AI but failing to integrate it properly into daily operations. Belgium scores 51 out of 100. The Netherlands stalls at 48 points. And when you look at how well AI is actually woven into daily work? Belgium scores just 38 points.
The biggest obstacle? Poor data quality. 69% of managers cite this as the top barrier to innovation. And governance? Only 15% of companies test, monitor, and manage AI risks in a structured way.
My take: This is the real story in the Benelux. Adoption is high. Investment is flowing. But the foundation — data quality, governance, integration — is shaky. You can’t build a skyscraper on sand. The companies that solve this first will win.
