Ireland prepares for major AI summit as Europe searches for a new strategy for artificial intelligence

October 6, 2026

Ireland is preparing to host one of Europe’s most important AI gatherings of the year as governments, technology companies and researchers prepare to debate the future of artificial intelligence.

The International AI Summit 2026 will take place in Dublin and will bring together international technology leaders, policymakers and researchers to discuss AI competitiveness, innovation and trust.

The Irish government says the summit is intended to help shape Europe’s approach to AI while ensuring that technological development remains compatible with European values.

Ireland wants a central role in European AI

Ireland has become one of Europe’s most important technology hubs.

Many of the world’s largest technology companies have significant European operations in the country. At the same time, Ireland has developed a growing domestic AI research and startup ecosystem.

That combination gives Dublin a strategic position in Europe’s AI debate.

The summit will bring together business leaders and policymakers at a time when European governments are increasingly concerned about the gap between Europe and the United States in AI investment and infrastructure.

European competitiveness takes centre stage

One of the central questions will be how Europe can accelerate AI adoption.

European companies have access to strong universities, industrial expertise and a large single market. However, the continent has struggled to produce AI companies with the scale of American technology giants.

The Irish government says the summit will examine how Europe can use AI to increase prosperity while maintaining European standards around trust and responsible technology.

That balance is becoming increasingly difficult.

Microsoft and the European Commission involved

The agenda includes senior figures from both government and industry.

Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin will open the event, while European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen is scheduled to give a keynote address.

Microsoft President and Vice Chair Brad Smith is also scheduled to speak.

The combination reflects the wider European debate.

Policymakers want stronger European AI capabilities, but many of the world’s most advanced AI platforms remain controlled by companies headquartered in the United States.

The next phase of European AI policy

The summit arrives as Europe enters a more practical phase of AI adoption.

The debate is moving away from simply asking whether AI should be regulated.

The bigger questions now concern how Europe can build infrastructure, attract investment, develop talent and deploy AI at scale while maintaining safety and public trust.

Ireland hopes Dublin can become an important meeting point for that conversation.
