OpenAI is expanding the way people interact with ChatGPT. On October 7, the company announced a global rollout of GPT-6 with Intelligent UI, bringing faster responses, visuals and interactive experiences into the conversation.
The change is designed to make ChatGPT more than a place where users type questions and receive blocks of text. Instead, the interface can offer richer ways to explore information and work with the results directly.
For consumers and businesses, the update reflects a broader shift in AI products: the competition is increasingly about the complete user experience, not just the underlying model.
ChatGPT is moving beyond text
Text remains useful, but it is not always the best way to present information.
Someone comparing several products may benefit from a structured comparison. A person working through a calculation may need an interactive tool. Someone learning a complicated concept might find a visual explanation easier to follow than several paragraphs.
OpenAI’s Intelligent UI initiative is intended to bring more of these experiences directly into ChatGPT. The company says GPT-6 is rolling out globally with visuals and interactive elements that users can explore and use within the conversation.
The significance is practical: users may increasingly be able to move from asking a question to working with an answer without switching between as many applications.
Why the interface matters as much as the model
AI companies have spent years competing on model performance.
They have compared reasoning, coding, mathematics, language understanding and other capabilities. Those remain important, but most users do not experience an AI model in isolation.
They experience it through an application.
The interface determines whether information is easy to understand, whether a result can be edited and how much effort is required to turn an answer into useful work.
A model that produces a strong answer but requires extensive manual formatting may be less convenient than a system that presents the same information in a form the user can immediately work with.
That makes interface design a growing competitive advantage.
The pressure from Google and Microsoft
OpenAI is not the only company moving in this direction.
Google is developing Gemini as an assistant that can work across its productivity ecosystem. Microsoft is expanding Copilot’s role within Windows and Microsoft 365. Both companies have advantages because they already control widely used software platforms.
OpenAI, by contrast, has built a large user base around ChatGPT and is increasingly trying to make the product useful for professional tasks as well as everyday questions.
The competitive question is whether users will prefer a general-purpose AI workspace or an assistant embedded directly in the software they already use.
The answer may vary by task. Someone writing a report may prefer ChatGPT, while someone working entirely in Microsoft 365 may value Copilot’s integration with existing documents and meetings.
What the update means for everyday users
For ordinary users, the most important question is whether the new experience makes common tasks easier.
A more interactive ChatGPT could help with comparing options, understanding information, exploring data and developing ideas. But the benefits will depend on which interactive elements are available to each user and how well they fit the task.
The rollout should not be confused with a guarantee that every answer is correct. Visuals and interactive components can make information easier to explore, but they do not automatically make the underlying information more accurate.
Users should still verify important claims, especially when dealing with financial, legal or medical decisions.
The bigger direction: AI as a digital work environment
The GPT-6 update is part of a wider industry movement.
AI applications are becoming environments where users can ask questions, manipulate information, use tools and work towards a finished result.
That is a bigger ambition than replacing a search engine or offering a more conversational interface.
If these products become sufficiently capable, people may increasingly start their work inside an AI workspace and use traditional applications only when necessary.
For OpenAI, the challenge will be to make the experience useful enough that people return to it for more than occasional questions.
For competitors, the challenge is to ensure that their own assistants remain central to everyday work.
