One of today’s most important developments is the growing amount of capital being directed toward European technology companies.
The European Commission’s Scaleup Europe Fund is designed to provide growth capital to promising European companies working in strategic technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, semiconductors, robotics and autonomous systems.
The fund is targeting approximately €5 billion, including a €1 billion contribution from the European Commission, with additional capital expected from other investors.
The objective is to address one of Europe’s longstanding technology problems: European companies can successfully develop innovative products but often struggle to obtain enough late-stage financing to compete globally.
AI requires enormous amounts of capital, particularly when companies need to build models, hire specialized researchers and develop computing infrastructure.
The Scaleup Europe Fund is therefore part of a broader attempt to ensure that successful European technology companies can scale within Europe instead of moving elsewhere to access capital.
