The head of OpenAI’s South Korean office said Wednesday that AI chip demand is expected to continue, and the company will prioritize partnerships with South Korean semiconductor companies. Kim Kyung-hoon made the remarks at a press conference marking the regional office’s first anniversary.
“It is important to have highly advanced semiconductors help faster and more intricate AI processing,” Kim said, reaffirming market optimism following the debut of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model earlier this month. Shares of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix rose over 3% and 5% respectively following the rollout.
OpenAI highlighted ChatGPT’s growth in South Korea: enterprise users increased 28 times year-on-year as of end-August, while ChatGPT Work and Codex users jumped 14 times over the past six months. Weekly active users for general-purpose ChatGPT in South Korea rose 35% year-on-year as of August 25.
