Zuckerberg Rejects AI Slowdown Calls as EU President Signals Support

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed back against growing calls to slow or suspend AI development, arguing that market mechanisms and the risk of legal action are the best safeguards against harmful outcomes source. In a post on X, Zuckerberg said people won’t want to use agents that aren’t aligned with their interests, so labs have a “strong natural incentive” to make their models more responsive to user needs source.

He cited Meta’s decision to delay the launch of its Muse AI system by several months to strengthen safety measures as evidence of responsible practice source. Zuckerberg also called for a “broader and more diverse ecosystem of evaluators,” a veiled critique of Anthropic, which some accuse of favoring evaluators with close ties to the company source.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU will invite major AI labs to discuss supporting industry efforts to slow the development of the most risky AI models, and will collaborate with like-minded countries such as the UK and Canada source.
